Not Done Yet

Canvas 8"x8" acrylic, tissue paper, monotype, metal ring and two sides - painted words.
These four directions have been a challenge and I'm not done yet but getting there! The meditating and writing has led me to re-look at directions...where I have been and in this one I have revisited the grand adventure of leaving the West, getting married and living in the East as a young woman. My writing has been helpful and one line in particular as advice not given but needed: "Give into the angels east allow your strong heart arrows to soften" I have enjoyed looking back to those days in the East and the blue moon speaks to me as a metaphor for cold winter nights in New York. Now I'm in that place of looking, wondering and sometimes jotting down ideas of what could be next. The area is small and it is already loaded with stuff...maybe something to unify...we shall see. Always good to share here on the blog.

On a personal note...I had my flu shot...ordered a really cute long fleece zip front robe...I am so ready for cool nights. We had our first rain last night so all I need is to pick up new slippers and I am set...bring it on...let it rain!! Are you ready?

  1. Looking back into the days, weeks or even years is always a good thing. It may be melancholy or it may be with joy, but always in the end we are shown the direction for our path.

Using art as a tool and a away to find the direction allows one to have a record. When the piece is ready, you will know, as long as you listen to your inner voice.

Thank you for sharing and all the best

  3. Cozy - that's the order of the day. I actually got new tires - not warm and fuzzy but good for the coming weather. Pulled out a few vests and my gloves. I want to put up little twinkling lights this weekend - the dark is difficult for me. I like your piece here Mary Ann and the process of writing and thinking, then painting.

  4. I like what you wrote about the east and directions. It is always good to have a starting point. Sort of like Dorothy going to see the wizard. I have always used Dorothy as a metaphor for my life. I hope I don't impose my views.....

  5. this painting has such depth. I love all the layers and marks. Interesting about looking back to the east and your earlier life. The older we get the more years and experiences we have to look back upon. They accumulate like layers of paint on a canvas and create a new whole.

For winter I have bought a new pair of shoes. I plan to buy a new jacket and pair of slacks. Meanwhile I have gotten out my handmade (not by me) slippers and have donned my fleece robe from a few years ago.

  6. That was a big change - going East. It takes courage and adaptability. I can't beleive at my age - I've never embarked on that big of a move. I like the image of the blue moon and the cold nights. The twinkling lights suggested by LAM is an idea I may steal!

  7. Those reflections on moving between West and East and back resonate with me. Except in my case, it's South to West to Southwest.

We are having a long Indian summer here in northern New Mexico and I am loving it. I'm not quite ready for winter snow and wind.

  8. Well, look how artsy you are! Very nice piece, there...I love it. Yes, it sounds like you are ready for the cold weather. My slippers were worn down to holes last spring and I tossed them in the trash when the flip flops came out of the closet. Now my feet are freezing and I need to get a new pair!

  11. Egmont, Thank you for your keen observations and wise words...yes, listening to one's inner voice is the true direction.

Sophia, Welcome and yes, sift through the blog as you wish.

Leslie, Tires may not be cozy but nice to be safe on an icy road. Twinkling lights will be a great spirit lifter in the dark months!

Laura, Thank you I'm liking the red and blue as well...I have three others using very different color palette.

  12. Pat, I like the Dorothy metaphor...aren't we all on our path following our own heart directions?

Suki, I am enjoying the years behind as well as the years ahead...they seem to all fit together.
You are so ready for winter! I have yet to order my slippers...right now the rain left and it is warm again?

Karen, Every move takes courage, even just down the road. I do admit to a thrill of adventure to my Eastern move, maybe because it was also to marry.
    Twinkling lights are the best!

  13. San, You had quite a change from South to West and then onto Southwest...very different indeed!
Your big sky, fall colors must be spectacular...I bet cool mornings!

Betsy, I've been loving the Land's End fleece slippers especially adding a monogram. They also wash well!

Jeane, We may work differently but I think we both know how rich studio time is in our lives! For me it is closely related to all things sane!

Heartfire, Thank you...I have three new canvases so the quest is on!

  14. Reflecting occasionally is good for the soul. I like this painting very much. If I break it down, it is the red on the left that seems to garner the most of my attention. The color of our roots. Nicely done.

  15. Have begun layering clothing here. We've had tons of rain,,and much cooler temps, but it's a beautiful sunshiny day today.
Somehow it's easier for me to 'find my way' in the bright sunshine,,,in life, as well as in art.
It's a very interesting art piece,,super texture. I love texture,,,,,

  20. Roxanne, Thank you...I was thinking about new directions but my meditating took me to looking back in so many directions. Have a great week too!

Julie,It was not my intention to look back but now that I am, I'm rather enjoying a look. Art making allows so many directions!

  21. yes, egmont is right, when the piece is ready, you will know - it will tell you - beautiful thoughts and words as usual here in your post - love the look at yesteryear and how it all came together in the beautiful blue piece - i've been wondering if you ever work in large pieces? your work is so fantastic - i always can see it "supersized" - personally, my art pieces have always been larger - but when i look at yours, i am able to see that such pieces can be done so beautifully in smaller sizes and are magnificent - i do love your work and it is an inspiration to us all!

  22. Gypsywoman, I've worked in a variety of sizes. When I had the large studio...I painted large but now with storage space limited and sales slow...I paint medium to small. I like both small and large to paint but very different mind set.
