Rough Beginnings!
Isn't that always the way? Got excited about beginning my project and started loading in all sorts of colors, shapes etc...The blue vertical lines are no more but they might return. I had to stop as I sanded about six small holes in the paper. Not very interesting shapes (the holes) so I patched them with linen tape. I decided to let this be the first step and move on. I can come back with my box cutter and see if I want to do a little cutting away and rearranging later in the project! For me it has a garden feel and because this project isn't well organized yet...a garden feel is okay with me. 20"x20" Rives BFK, acrylic, stencil, crayon and tar gel.
I read in my Kabbalah book a chapter on "certainty". A line of wisdom struck me: "When challenges appear overwhelming, inject Certainty...The light is always there!"
Garden Update: Finally, out of 20 little green tomatoes... I just picked a red one!

It is looking very interesting. Can not wait to see the next step.
ReplyDeleteI enlarged, and see so much interest here. I think I found the patches, and they only add to,and do not detract.
ReplyDeleteAs always, I love your chosen palette, and am eager to see where this takes you.
I just stumbled upon your blog and find I love your use of color. Have you finished your exploration of Yupo?
ReplyDeleteMary Ann, this piece is stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteAs Babs commented the patches add interest. I love it exactly the way it is. Your Ancient Dashboard has always been my favourite piece but this is definitely at the top of my favourites list. I hope you bannish the box cutter in this instance :-)
It is always fun to see the genesis of a piece, right now I love that there is a calm space in the center.
ReplyDeleteI see some little hieroglyphic-like snakes and birds in there amongst the cabbages and roses, as well as some rake marks left in the rich soil. Of course, if you hadn't mentioned "garden" I would no doubt have interpreted these signs and symbols in a completely other manner. Or perhaps not. I think the addition of the linen tape is brilliant and it will add another texture as well as some good linear movement. I love that you sanded 6 holes in your paper: That's enthusiasm and engagement for you!
ReplyDeleteThe light is always there. That is such a positive statement! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI like that quote. It is something to carry into life.
ReplyDeleteAnd you speak of the "mighty" box cutter as a cure all. Why not show it to us, it must be gold plated and filled with insight. That is something we all need. or maybe it is "certainty".
I like what you have done so far!
great piece I love the texture and think the patches are wonderful!!
ReplyDeletegotta love a rough beginning - it jolts our senses and that can lead to all kinds of wonderful things! xxo
ReplyDeleteI like the comparison to a garden--that's a great visual, and appropriate. Your colors are fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI love that quote on "certainty", thanks for sharing that. I think garden feel is right on for me too...has a joyous feel also....oh and a luscious home grown tomato, what could be better?
ReplyDeletestrong colors and a feeling of strength and positive outlook.
ReplyDeleteI love these colours - there's a piece in your bird series which uses a similar set. Hope you won't be too drastic with your tool set.
ReplyDeleteI love your boldness in your art, that you sand and scrape and cut your pieces. AND the results are magnificent! Your spiritual connection to your art is beautiful, reading how you think things out, research things and dive in... have a fantastic day today! roxanne
ReplyDeleteKatelen, Thank you...trying to fit in more studio days.
ReplyDeleteBabs, I'm enjoying the glazing and scrubbing away process?!
Lindamay,Thanks for stopping by...my Yupo exploration feels complete for now but will return as still plenty to learn. yupo set on flickr.
Robyn, Your words are magic...I've put the box cutter in the drawer!
Maggie, I agree...some calm spaces.
Louciao, I used little stamps from a kiddie museum art set...supposedly it reads Mary!
Annell, The human dilemma ...forgetting!
Pat, I have an ordinary box cutter but maybe it has hidden powers? Glad you like certainty...for me it is not always easy to apply.
ReplyDeleteLDV, Thank you...it is a powerful little sander!
Jeane, I agree...a good beginning jolt to the art making...studios are full of surprises!
Leslie, Garden makes me happy as a beginning piece to this project...always good to start in a good place!
Cynthia, I'm sorry to report that was one of the worst tomatoes I have ever eaten...pithy almost mushy inside??
Donna, Thank you...always try a positive outlook...beats the opposite! ha
Annie, I received the sander as a gift from my son...small but packs some power! ha
Roxanne, Art informs life and life informs the art...big circle, this artists life!
I'm liking this. Love the colours and the design elements. Interesting about injecting certainty when overwhelmed. It's like the antidote? Gives us the positive energy to continue rather than collapse into a heap of despair. I could do with a little injections sometimes!
ReplyDeleteanother fabulous piece over here, dear lady! and far too long since i wandered over! i always enlarge your pieces, too, as it just gives such added depth and focus on your beautiful work! and this one, no exception! love it!
