Fresh Start

An assortment of surface cloth treatments. Starting from the left is a brocade strip which I have touched off with embroidery, the yellow and purple squares began as paper napkins which I applied a momigami (Japanese}kneading technique. This technique allows the paper to become more clothlike and easier to sew. The bundles of cloth with rubber bands are folded cloth ready for a bleach bath and the stamped cloth is another step after the cloth has been bleached, dyed and now stamped. Not sure where these will fit but it is good to have these ready options.
The events at Boston had a profound affect on me and I've lacked the energy to go into the studio for art making. I've watched all the horror on TV news since my early 20's but some hurt me more than others. I did get into the studio with these explorations and I'm feeling better this weekend. I'll begin again this Monday with a piece I had started before Boston. During this down time I also had my carpets cleaned and yardwork done...another way to step into fresh starts and feeling hopeful again.
I just don't understand how we all live on this one planet?!

  1. Sometimes I take a news fast. It just gets too depressing. But you can't let that happen, otherwise the bad wins.

  2. I find this batch of textile exploration particularly exciting. I am living vicariously through your experiments.
While being aware of the horrors of the world, I think we must focus on the beauty. How else to go on living?

    1. Oh yes, all these experiments! This bleaching bit is done out on the deck so I'm not overcome with bleach smells! It is a true toss up on what happens...fabric is tricky!
I got myself back in the studio so good advice and well wishes have been helpful! One can only watch so much TV News??!!!

  3. I know exactly what you mean about the news and the events in Boston. I find that making art is both an escape and a type of therapy for me; there is healing in the act of creation. Glad you're feeling better and creating something beautiful. Those fabrics look amazing!

  4. Glad you're back making. When I taught 10 year olds I did tie dying of t shirts and had to peg them up all round the classroom to dry . It was in the 1970s and we used to be able to do a lot of things that would never pass health and safety rules nowadays. Your bleaching outside reminded me of this. Oh - the 32 children in my primary class loved their crazy tops :>)

    1. Your tie dye class sounds like so much fun! I live here in a town of surfers and they still wearing tie dye shirts! It's good to be back working...outside on the deck or inside with all my mess!

  5. Do like seeing all the bits and pieces assembled for making Maryanne! Momigami sounds intriguing!
As to the other topic... the horror out there can have such a numbing effect so to feel as you have done Maryanne is a paradoxically strong reminder for some that these things can't simply be shaken off or ignored.
I always think that the 'comfortable' ignoring the 'uncomfortable' comes at a price.
Hope this week you are getting back on track in the studio!

    1. Sophie, Taking the time to create this inventory for the next exploration has been its own fun!
The business of reporting these awful tragedies is that they are non-stop and then suddenly they move on to the next...one is left with a rather empty unresolved feeling.
Thank you, I did get back into the studio and feeling on track again!

  6. wonderful assortment of materials waiting for you here. Sometimes we just have to step back for a breather. Return refreshed.

    Boston was horrible.

For myself, I do not watch television news or any tv. I listened on the radio to the news events for a bit, but even NPR reporting can be so stressful. It may be horrible too, but I turn it off. My feeling is these things are happening out there whether I watch them or not. The main person my watching/listening effects is myself and my nerves. Well, not many feel this way.

Hope you are enjoying your new home! I think i tried that kneading thing myself at one point. Hugs, Suki

    1. Suki, I have enjoyed making this assortment and it has helped in returning to the studio. The kneading process was not so easy and rather oily!
Paul is an avid listener to NPR and feels he gets the best of current events, interviews and reviews.
