Sacred Cloth Revealed 2

13"x14", layers of black satin, netting, muslin and loose weave printed cloth, machine stitching, embroidery and beads, ink pen markings.

Beginning new work with my focus mainly on machine and hand stitching. In this case I was trying for a weave effect by sewing a variety of rows of stitching to create a design. An old cloth uncovered, frayed and stained ... a remnant of a cloth of possible sacred use. Trying also to stay with desert colors and shapes. I used four thin layers of cloth to give depth and as a reminder of what remains after a long time of neglect. I'm interested in starting my next piece and hoping to include bead fringe. I picked up a 'Bead' book at the library and I'm excited to try some new methods with beads. Bead fringe will be my first new effort!

  1. Mmmmm that black satin adds a pop and base to the work, Mary Ann. Beautiful.

    1. Carole, Thank you ... I chose the black for that very reason and I want to keep my pieces free form rather than bound as a quilt.

    1. Carole, Thank you,...photos are not easy for me. My hair is now really white and has been since my late 30's ... for fun, I'm always using hair coloring like on a white canvas...plenty of surprises!

    1. Caterina, The mix of fabrics ... from satin to netting to cotton also gives interest here.

  4. really love this. the flexibility. it feels ancient yes, something dug up in an archaeological excavation. I once wanted to be an archaeologogist and in college contemplated going on a summer dig. But didnt.

    1. Suki, Thank you. I subscribe to Biblical Archaeology Review and so enjoy reading latest finds. Going on a dig always sounds exciting but then there is the heat and dirt...not for me.

  5. I love how you've managed to create an ancient look even though the colour remains bright. The patches on it whether sewn or drawn give it the feeling of collage as well as age which I really like.

    1. Thank you ... a new kind of ancient! I'm fascinated with revealing, uncovering, what was once and found again. I guess we all have themes running through us and these 'sacred cloths' have been a great place for me to explore.

  6. Deceptively simple and altogether satisfying. So much room for the eye, the imagination, and the spirit to roam in this small piece. Just enough elaboration, just enough hints at a rich history unspoken but somehow carried through time...layered with embellishments lost and found.
